BIOGRAPHY
• Aninha
Ana Lins dos Guimarães Peixoto was born in August 20th, 1889, at the Casa Velha da Ponte (Old House from the Bridge). Her father was Francisco de Paula Lins dos Guimarães Peixoto and her mother was Jacinta Luiza do Couto Brandão. Cora Coralina, or Aninha (her nickname as a child) studied until third grade from primary school. At the age of 14 she wrote her first short story and poems. The poet reappeared at the local literary scenario when adolescent. She elaborated, among other local writers, the short story “Tragédia na Roça” (tragedy at the country-side), which was pressed in the “Historical and Geographical Annual Book”. That was how she started to be recognized as Cora Coralina, her pseudonymous that she herself has begun to use as a writer. In this first part of her life, Cora extracted the memories that compound the majority of her poems. Cora names herself as Aninha and it´s through their unquiet childish eyes that her poetic way to look things would arise.
• Cora Bretas
In 1910, Cora married Cantídio Bretas. In 1911 she leaves to São Paulo and by that time she was already pregnant. In this time of her life Cora takes a mother and house-wife part and enters a new step on her life. Cora had 6 children and lived at the state of São Paulo for 45 years. Cantídio died in 1934. At the age of 67, when Cora was already a widow, she regressed to her native town.
Cora Coralina lived on lots of cities as Jaboticabal, São Paulo, Penápolis, Andradina. During this time she never came back to Goiás. At Jaboticabal Cora worked successfully on selling flowers (specially roses) and she also participated on “Jaboticabal´s Social Beneficent Assistance”, which was founded by the “Charity Ladies Association”. At São Paulo she has runned a hotel, since she cooked very well and had many contacts at this city. At Penápolis she used to sell seedlings of plants. Thus she contributed to environmental campaigns and to the regional market. Still at Penápolis, her life was linked to the “São Francisco de Assis Sanctuary”, and she felt she belonged to those principles. At Andradina, she became well known by the population because of her connection to the land. She owned a property called Casinha Branca (Little White House) at Castilho (a village next to Andradina) and there she used to sell some vegetables and a delicious pork sausage that was seasoned by herself.
• Cora Coralina
The value of her poetry was increased and she became nationally famous. All this happened after some comments that were made public by two well known writers: Oswaldino Marques – writer who was born at the state of Maranhão and on the 70´s wrote the article: “Cora Coralina, teacher of existence” and Carlos Drummond de Andrade – on the 80´s he has made the famous public statement saying that Cora was the most important person at the state of Goiás. That´s the moment when Cora Coralina emerges as a writer.
Her first book was published only in 1965, when she was 76 years old. It´s a life story told on the perspective of a woman that found on poetry, only by the time of the end of her life, her space to express, with a unique sensibility, her perceptions about the time she has lived. She portraits herself, specially by this time of her life, as an independent woman regarding her ideas and attitudes.
Cora Coralina died on April 10th, 1985, at the city of Goiânia. Her body was taken to Goiás Velho and buried at São Miguel Cemetery. Still, her poetry remains more alive than ever on the memory of those who admire her story.
When I die, I won´t die in everything.
I´ll be forever on the pages of this book, most alive creation
Of my interior life, on lonely childbirth.
